Martyn's Law: can your building tell everyone what to do? Run the free check →

The fault was there this morning. Now it has gone.

It seems like the fault won't stay still long enough for anyone to find it. That's frustrating for you and for whoever comes.

Why it happens

A fault that comes and goes follows a condition: a loose connection that moves with temperature, water that gets in with rain, a circuit that only faults when a zone is in use. In the jobs behind this page, call-outs found healthy systems on arrival, with the fault visible only in the system's own log.

What you can safely check

  1. Write down every time it appears and clears, with the date, time and what was going on (weather, events, works, a test).
  2. Photograph the panel each time.
  3. Ask for the fault log to be kept. Some older systems hold only a few hundred entries and overwrite them, so a system with many standing faults loses its own history.

When to call a technician

Once you have two or three times written down. Ask whoever comes to retrieve and keep the log, and to come back when the fault is present if it can't be found.

Questions for whoever comes

  • What does the log show, and for which circuit?
  • What condition do you think brings it on?
  • Can the standing faults be cleared so the log has room for this one?
