The microphone in the fire control room no longer works.
It looks like the microphone the fire service or your own staff would use for live announcements isn't working. That's the part of the system that lets a person say something a recorded message can't.
What is usually wrong
The microphone itself, its cable or connector, a faulty button or indicator on the call station, or the call station's connection back to the rack. In the jobs behind this page, faults included failed desk microphones, dry solder joints behind selection buttons, and damaged control knobs.
What you can safely check
- Check the panel for a microphone or call station fault.
- Try a test announcement to one zone, if your procedures allow it, and note what happens.
- Look for visible damage to the cable, connector or buttons.
When to call a technician
Promptly. A fire microphone is monitored for a reason, and a fault on it is a fault on the emergency system.
Questions for whoever comes
- Is it the microphone, the call station or the link to the rack?
- Is a replacement held, or does it need ordering?
- Was the microphone tested at the last maintenance visit?
