Martyn's Law: can your building tell everyone what to do? Run the free check →

During the fire alarm test, one floor didn't hear the message.

It seems like a test that should have reassured everyone has raised a question instead. That's worth getting to the bottom of.

What may have happened

There are several possibilities and only the system's log can separate them. A floor may have been in a different phase of a phased evacuation and been played the alert message, or nothing, by design. A message may have been overridden by a higher-priority fire alarm input, which is correct behaviour. Or a circuit, amplifier or fire alarm input may genuinely have failed. In the jobs behind this page, each of those has happened.

What you can safely check

  1. Write down the date, time and floor, and who heard what.
  2. Ask for the voice alarm event log for that time; it records which messages were triggered for which zones.
  3. Ask the fire alarm contractor what inputs the fire panel sent at that time.

When to call a technician

Before the next test. The answer is usually in the two logs side by side.

Questions for whoever comes

  • What did the voice alarm log record for that zone at that time?
  • What did the fire alarm panel send?
  • Is the cause-and-effect for that floor written down?
