Despite the growing demand for PAVA systems, fire and security contractors have limited access to training and support. Most training is by manufacturers, which is understandably biased, devoid of contracting knowledge and thin on real world frontline issues.
Manufacturer training is not cheap either, so for most contractors the question is, can the growth in PAVA business justify the cost of sound and PAVA training?
For contractors doing a small number of sound projects the answer is “no.” Even for contractors doing more regular PAVA if the project is complex, skilful extra support can make the difference between a loss and profit.
There’s also the issue of those trained staff wanting a pay rise or who simply up and leave.
ProAudium fills that space where contractors are looking to win more sound and PAVA work but don’t want to spend out on all the training, staff and kit. As their PAVA business develops so we change from doing the work to training their staff.
But anytime that contractor wins a difficult project or needs extra resources we’re on hand to support them.
We’ve spent all our working lives in the sound industry working for manufacturers and contractors. For a few years we even ran our own contracting firm. That was initially a specialist sound system contractor but as we grew we added CCTV, Fire, Access control and many other technologies. It then turned bad and failed. We therefore know the pain and humiliation of failure.
Before that we both started at Millbank Electronics Dave building systems and Nigel designing them.
Dave progressed to working on the complex and diverse passenger communication systems including the PAVA for London Underground. Nigel chose not to finish his HNC in electrical and electronic engineering and went in to sales engineering (mostly because he got a car). He sold and designed, fire alarm, CCTV, access controls and later talking car alarms.
After our business failed Nigel took a sales job and passed an open university course in Sustainable Technology, whilst Dave managed the system build and manufacturing for a major PAVA manufacturer.
Whilst the regular salary was nice in less than two years we decided to start again—this time in energy conservation; but within a few months of starting the economy crumbled, “aarghh”. People lost interest in saving the planet when they needed to save their job. However, we were getting regular work from helping others with sound system issues. We decided to go where the work took us, but with a twist.
We called our new venture AudEval (the name coming from mashing Audio and Evaluation together).
Coincidentally about the same time Rupert Moon, another industry veteran, started ProAudium doing similar work. We ended up working on each other’s projects. Then in 2012 Rupert got a great career opportunity outside the UK. It therefore made sense we acquire his business.
Now ProAudium helps contractors whilst AudEval helps end clients with new projects. So what’s the twist, we’re no longer a contractor, that’s for braver souls than us. That means we are not a rival to our contractor clients, we also know a lot about a little (sound and PAVA engineering). That means if a contractor and manufacturer are not on best terms we can probably help out.

Are you new to our website?
It’s a little sparse at the moment, but that will change. This will be an information library and resource that any contractor can use to do more in the PAVA and sound field.
If you give us your email address, we’ll keep it safe, then as we add things, we’ll update you.
The sections we’ll be adding are:
New to PAVA and Sound?
We’ll be adding familiarization guides, you’ll learn about the terminology, as well as basic steps in design, commissioning and maintenance.
Need a design, commissioning or maintenance plan?
We’ll be adding outlines on the key elements you need that will ensure a high performing system your client will love.
Looking for design and maintenance document examples?
You’ll be able to download word excel, and PDF versions we’ve created and honed over “way” too many years.
Are you in a service and support leadership role?
We’ll be adding a free subscription service that will help you keep your techs up-to-date and provide resources to help manage your growing PAVA portfolio.
Really want to learn a lot (while having fun)?
We’ll be running training courses, some on-line, others face-to-face even at your office. They’ll be practical and hands-on, oh and not about one manufacturer’s kit – well unless you want that.
